Escape Rig: 2014 Toyota Tundra + X1 Camper

When Rachel and Collin found out they were having a kid, they didn’t downshift— they doubled down. With their Tundra build and X1 camper (aka PakBurro), they set out to keep the adventures rolling. Slate’s first camping trip? A week in Baja. Not bad for a newborn. From snow days to desert nights, the trio (plus two dogs) is proving that family life and off-grid living go together just fine—as long as you’ve got the right rig, a little grit, and maybe a few extra diapers.

Your rig's nickname?

Pak Burro

What mods have you made to your truck?

Pak Burro sits on 35” Nitto Recon Grapplers, 17" Nomad Sahara wheels, Fox 2.5DSC suspension, Alcan Leaf Springs and Archive Garage components. We use the Rig'd Ramble Swing Pro and Ramble Racks for MTB and Buscadero Pitbike. Electrical system is with Blaze Off-Road. Lighting is Baja Designs paired with SP dimmer.

What was your goal with your camper build out?

We like to do it all. So we wanted to keep the build flowy for surfing, MTB, and snowboarding!

Build Highlights:

We built out two bench x storage systems on either side of the bed with our Ice Co fridge in the back middle and it is always evolving lol.

Blaze Off-Road built our custom electrical system. A hefty 200amphr battery with Redarc controller paired with a 100w solar panel on the roof and a Nico Shore power charger for those long days in the driveway. Plans for a heater and a fan for sucking the heat out during the hot camping months.

What's Your Favorite piece of gear?

This is a tough one. We have narrowed it down to a few things:

What's the best unexpected benefit of owning your X1?

"The ability to pop the camper and have baby naps wherever and whenever!"

What do you love most about your rig?

"The rig allows us to safely travel with our dogs and kiddo in the truck while keeping our gear in the camper safe and secure. We are able to keep all our camping essentials in the truck so all we have to do is pack some clothing and the fridge and hit the gas pedal!"

What's your favorite thing about your setup?

"I love how easy, low-profile, and stoutly built the X1 is and it fits with my old truck so well. I'm hard on gear. We use it a ton. This is clearly built to last.

It functions so incredibly nice just as a topper for everyday use. The single handed latches and completely open side doors with rain gutters is just killer."

What’s your favorite adventure you've taken?

"By far, South of the border with our six week old! Dream trip would be to head further south to Argentina!"

What's your fave road snack?

"Dots Pretzels and more Dots Pretzels."

Fun fact about yourself?

"We both quite our jobs within a week to work full time at Rayco"
