The Escape Rig: 2021 Toyota Tacoma

Based in Austin, Texas, Ryan Magsino lives with his wife & their new baby boy. When his workweek as a graphic designer comes to an end, you'll find him either wrenching on his Tacoma build, whooping it up on single-track in the hill country on his mountain bike, or snagging Redfish down on Padre Island.

How’d you get started in the outdoors?

I grew up in Florida and spent many weekends fishing with my dad and continued doing so into adulthood. I’d always find a body of water and wonder “could I catch something out of here?” When I moved to Texas and first met my girlfriend (now wife) she introduced me to hammock camping. Then we got into a ground tent, which became an obsession with rooftop tents, and then that led to us finding Super Pacific. We both love traveling and the outdoors, and it means doing many different activities including fishing, mountain biking, hiking, swimming, camping. I owe it all to people close to me that have shared their passions.

Favorite thing about your X1 Camper?

Aside from how easy it is to set up, I really love using it as a mobile garage. I’m able to keep my camp gear, fishing gear, and bike gear inside the truck at all times. It makes getting outside and doing things so much easier.

Does your camping rig have a nickname?

Taco. In our house, you’ll often hear, “Man, I love tacos,” or “Whoa, did you see that taco drive by?” or “I think we should take the taco out camping by the river this weekend.”

What was your philosophy when you built out your rig?

My intention was to create a mobile garage capable of going on self sustaining camping trips, extended bike missions, or stealthy river fishing at the drop of a hat. It needed it to be flexible. The truck needed to carry at least 4 people and one dog. It also needed to be okay as a daily driver. After all, I'd still get groceries from time to time. All hat, all cattle.

What upgrades have you made to your truck?

  • Sherpa Animas 21 Roof Rack
  • Dobinsons 1.5-3.0" IMS Lift
  • Dobinsons Medium duty leaf pack
  • Sumo Springs Rear
  • Nomad Sahara Machined 17" Wheels
  • SSO Slimeline Front Bumper
  • Baja Designs S8 30in Amber Lightbar
  • Midland Radio MXT275 Micro Mobile
  • Toyota TRD Skidplate
  • RRW Rock Sliders
  • Wolfbox G900 Dash Cam
  • Total Chaos Bed Stiffeners

Top 3 favorite things about your current setup?

  1. My favorite things right now are the “chopped” decked system I have that allows for storage and an alley way for getting into the camper.
  2. Another is the Kammok Crosswing awning, it’s so quick deploying and seamlessly attaches to the SP rails. Shade is a must have in Texas.
  3. Third is a recently installed passenger side window on the hatch door. It’s mostly for our pup Suna to have some airflow at night, but could also be a closer step to cooking and selling tacos from inside the camper.

What Wild Pursuits have you been getting up to?

Driving through the vast land in Texas, and beyond. Camping in the arid mountains of Big Bend, or setting up at a bike park in the hill country. Coastal trips to find Redfish on the fly at Padre Island National Seashore, and wading through holes looking for rainbow trout in the Guadalupe River.

What do you love most about your setup?

I've loved using it in many different scenarios, but more specifically how the X1 helps us stay outside longer. We've pushed ourselves to travel through difficult mountain trails and through tight woods. It seriously has changed how we camp.
