The HOWL R3 is a portable propane fire pit that delivers both flame and real heat. Its A-Flame burner throws the campfire you came for, while the U-Tube BarCoal glows red-hot underneath, kicking out the same infrared heat as a bed of wood coals. At 19.6 lbs it carries one-handed or slings over one shoulder, and it runs at 1,100ºF for 6 hours on a 20 lb tank.

Less pit than the R4 MKII, more heat than the R1: the R3 sits in the middle of the HOWL line. See how the three compare in the table below.

Frequently asked questions

What fuel does the HOWL R3 use, and how long does it burn?

It runs on propane. At full blast it burns 6 hours on a 20 lb tank. An 8-ft regulator hose is included.

How hot does the R3 get?

The operating temperature is 1,100ºF and fuel use peaks at 64,750 BTUs per hour. The A-Flame burner makes the visible flame, and the U-Tube BarCoal glows red-hot underneath, giving off infrared heat like a bed of wood coals.

How big and heavy is it?

It weighs 19.6 lbs and measures 18" x 11.98" x 5.82" with the legs in. It is light enough to carry one-handed or sling over one shoulder.

Can I use it during a fire ban?

Propane appliances are treated differently from wood fires in some places, but rules vary by land agency, location, and date. Check current restrictions with the managing agency before you light it.

What is included?

The fire pit and an 8-ft regulator hose. A propane tank is not listed as included.

Do I need a camper or vehicle to use it?

No. It stands on its own folding legs and needs only a propane tank and the included hose, so it works at a ground camp, on a tailgate, or in the backyard.

Which HOWL should I buy, the R1, R3, or R4 MKII?

The R1 gives you flame in the lightest frame. The R3 gives you flame and heat at 19.6 lbs. The R4 MKII is the hottest of the three, with 3 burners. The comparison table below lays out the specs.
